General Care Discussion :: It is a good morning!

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hey everybody--I think Lucille is going to be all right.

Late yesterday afternoon I put her in her new big, warm aquarium and all she did all evening was lay in the warm 82 degree water with just her front legs resting on her basking dock. When I went to bed I was afraid that when I got up this morning she would be dead. She hasn't eaten nor swam in 5 days.

But when I got up, she slid of the dock and swam along the side of the aquarium, following me as I walked along. Then she dove to the bottom, walked around on the rocks for awhile and swam back up to her dock and climbed on it.

I took her out, talked to her a bit and wanted to kiss her--but I didn't :-) and put her in her feeding tub. She started eating--the veggie bits which she has always refused to eat!! Then I put in some dried shrimp, her favorite, and she ate like she was starved--which she probably was.

I think she is going to make it!!! She isn't swimming lopsided, she seems very happy.

I just want to thank everyone who helped me! The pet store owners don't really know a thing about RES and if I had followed what they told me, Lucille WOULD have died. You people are the best!!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Lucille thanks you too--for helping her stupid mommy take care of her.

That's wonderful! :D Glad to hear she's doing so much better and enjoying her new home. You may want to slowly decrease the water temp down to 80 degrees and once you're sure that she's not sick (no symptoms for a week) you can slowly reduce it to 78 degrees.

Also, be mindful that a sick RES may sometimes appear to be recovering without any medication but then fall sick again in another day or two. So keep an eye out for anymore symptoms and take her to the vet immediately if she starts to exhibit anymore signs of a respiratory infection over the next few days.

I'm so glad to hear that Lucille's feeling better today! You are a good mommy for getting her the setup she needs.

And I agree with DavidY, keep an eye out and make sure she continues to do well. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
