i just bouths oem sand yet i didn't use it yet. i bought exo-terra riverbed sand and its ingestible and looks great.

Yea I know, we're all like, "Gee, I really want to try that!" but nobody wants to be the first to do it. lol! I may go ahead and try it on my 40gal planted tank and see how it goes... I'll let y'all know when/if I do.

Yeah but she gets that fancy european river sand or something like that. All we get around here is mud. jk I'm thinking of trying some of the play sand that you get at HOme Depot and just rinse it out really good...maybe...

just don't try calcium sand... maybe if you wash it really well, but it's just not a good thing, trust me (i tried it, but never put the turtles in with it because it never stopped being cloudy and then I learned it's not for use underwater, just in terrariums, and it left calcium powder stuff all over the walls of the aquarium once i emptied it)

Wow, that must have been a mess! Thanks for the warning. I also heard that calci-sand causes impaction in lizards too.

Doesn't Exo-Terra sell riverbed sand?

Yeah, Exo-terra sells river sand. I played with some once from a broken bag. It was actually really nice feeling, not too coarse but real heavy so it won't float. Unless your turtle is a major substrate eater, it won't cause a problem.

I've been having a hard time finding it again though... Probably because I live in the middle of nowhere though. But when I find it, I'm using it in my tank.

And I don't recommend the play sand, it can be really messy and a waste of water because it's so light.

Yea the play sand is very dusty. It would probably take too much work to rinse it out enough. I'll keep an eye out for the river sand too. If anyone else should happen to get it first and try it on their tank, let me know how it goes, okay?

I heard somewhere if you pour the sand in a little bit at a time, with the water already in there, it won't make a huge mess like mine did when i put sand first then water, but you have to literally do it a tiny bit at a time (I experimented with my 2.5 gallon) and then there is barely any cloudiness (I didn't even was the sand first since it was just an experiment)
