Feeding and Nutrition :: Eating too much too fast?

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

At my local pet store you can buy anachris in little bundles for a low price so I bought 3 bundles. I wanted to start using live aquatic plants in my tank so I threw all of the bundles in at once. I knew he would eat them, but Blapple ate all three bundles in 1 day! So much for using live plants as decorations. Is that OK or am I overfeeding the little guy by doing this? He's only about 4-5 inches.

So how big was each piece? Id say that was overfeeding. When i first got my turtle i would feed him 15 pellets a day. He was only 4-5'' Like yours. Than i found the forum. Now i feed him a diet of 7 pellets a day. I think your turtle is fine. just feed him his regular amount of pellets and maybe try plastic plants.

I just didn't think he'd eat it all in one day. I guess I learned my lesson and now he has plenty of scraps to dig for in his rocks. :D

He definitly doesn't waste anything. If it's green or moving and he can fit it in his mouth he's gonna eat it whether he's hungry or not.

You can't really overfeed on plants, the only real side effect is loose stool. It's not nearly as serious as overfeeding protein and causing pyramiding, so if Blapple ate three plants, he'll be fine, I think he just squashed your dreams of living decorations though :-)

I was wondering recently if there were any problems associated with too many greens other than messy poops, my turt has recently become a veggie eating machine (i'm so proud!) and i wanted to make sure i wasn't hurting his health by giving lots of them. That makes me feel better.

I know that Brooks loves the anchoris and the sword something or other and the water hyacinths but doesn't ever eat the hornwort. So maybe try that in your tank for the pretty plant effect. It works for me  I actually have so much of it that I keep making more the longer that they get! When I give Brooks anchoris she eats all of them (I also usually buy 3 or so at a time) in 1-2 days.
