Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Mon Aug 20, 2007 2:16 pm   where do they go when you clean the tank?

When i clean the tank i do the heavy duty stuff, i take all the water out scrub and make it look like new, i do this every so often. But i was wondering what to do with the turtles while im cleaning the tank. should i put them in a smaller tank but have it like landish looking. or should i put them in a bowl? what do all of you do when you do the tank cleaning thing:)

Most people just put their turtles in a separate bowl or tank. That's fine for an hour or so while you clean.

I put them in their feeding tub and either put some of the water in there and feed them, or just lay a towel on the bottom of it instead and let them hang out for a bit if they've already eaten.

I used to put them in a cool whip container but now I have to use a large rubbermaid.

Just put them inside a box or rubbermaid container with a towel or soft t-shirt for them to burrow in.

If it's nice I put them outside. I have a pen they can't escape from. If it's not good weather, they go in the bathtub.

LOL, i just noticed that you named your fish......if they're in the same tank as your turtles, don't get too attached. If you're really attached to the fish, you may wanna put them in a seperate tank. just speaking from experience.....

I keep them in dry dock overnight as the heaters warm up the water. The downside is I'm always cleaning the tank at night!

When I'm just cleaning out poop and decorations she stays in there.

If I do a complete water change I put her in her feeding tub with some veggies and she can much away.

lol. no there definately not in the tank with my turtles. Those little boogers would eat them alive

Well i got abigger filter today, and the tank is all redone, and i noticed that my heatlamp was making the basking 114 degrees, no wonder the water was so hot, and they didnt want to bask:( so i changed it around and right now the temp is at 90 degrees, and water is at 80 degrees. still trying to get the water lower, but since its summer, the room is kinda hot. and i dont think i should put the fan on them, to drafty i think.

Bathtub is a great safe place for a turtle to go while you clean the tank. :)

When he was little, I put Mikey in the sink. But yesterday he was sick and I had to change out his tank so he sat in sulfadip.

I'd be a little worried about soap and cleaning residue in the tub getting on or harming my turtle. As my largest tank is 50 gallons it doesn't take too long for the heater to heat it back up I usually put Leo in her plastic travel case. Anything that they can't escape from pretty much makes a good holding tank while you clean.

I have a 2.5 gallon tank for cleaning. I use their existing water so they are comfortable. I feel bad during water changes- each one has their own 20 gallon and moving to a much smaller tank must feel like prison.
