General Care Discussion :: Sleeping

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Lately I've noticed Ethel sleeping during the day. I've never seen either sleep with the lights on, and I've caught it at least 6 times this week. She's not sluggish or lethargic at all when she's not sleeping, I'm just a little worried. Should I be? Any ideas?

Sleeping on the basking area or in the water? When you come near her, does she wake up or at least open her eyes? If so, and if she's acting normally otherwise, I'd just keep an eye on her for now.

Has the weather cooled considerably where you are? Perhaps she's reacting to the changing seasons.

Sleeping on the basking dock is totally normal. So is taking a short nap during the day under the water (when no one is around). Sometimes they just get bored (or that sunlight just feels SOOOO good!). As long as she isn't sluggish any other time (and is alert when you are around) then I wouldn't worry too much.

Alright thanks, it's only in the water, and she does wake up if I get close to the tank or she hears us talking about her (kidding but it seems like she does)

Yeah, I think it might be the change in the weather, although their tank temp hasn't changed it has gotten considerably colder outside.
