Even if you can't sell turts in NJ, it's a bus and train ride away to get to chinatown. I know my friend did
And I hear NJ is now accepting wood or musk turtles? just brief..

I guess I never thought that they would do that, but I do hope that they discourage it a little stronger, like take out ads in the newspaper or something similar to inform people of what it is like to own a turtle, that would at least keep some people from buying one. :D

NJ has some pretty picky laws. You're supposed to have a license if you keep a turtle (don't know how many comply, though).

Hi Donna !
well i guess these mall turtles are becoming popular everywhere. I live in PA in Tarentum and they just opened a new piitsburgh mills mall and they were set up in there to. in the middle of the walk way there they were. My best friend seen them one day and she went and asked some questions and they completley lied to her to get her to but them. They told her that they would stay small and she only needed to keep them in the little plastic bug tank thing. They did not say anything about salamenella ( i think i spelt that wrong ! ) They did not tell her anything about proper care. She bought one for my son and three for her kids. well as soon as she came back home with them we went to a local pet shop to get food. That is where they informed us that the turtles were not allod to be sold and that it was against the law because of the salamanella that they trasmit. Well when I heard this me and my friend were very angry that these people were getting away with this and passing them off as great toys for everyone. I then to set out to shut these people down . I first called the mall that they were selling them and it was illegal. The mall then said that they were going to investigate and see. I was not totaly thrilled with that answer so i decided to call who I could and make sure they got in trouble. First place I called was the game comm. They then told me to call this one and this one and just gave me the run around. finally got a hold of someone and they told me to try the board of health. I called them and they said to get a hold of the FDA that they are the ones that put the law into effect. so I called them and they were the correct ones to get a hold they atomatically asked me where they were set up and if they had this and that and said that they would let me know what happens. The next day They called me and told me that they shut them down and they gave them till the end of the day to get rid of everything. They then said that they were telling anyone who bought one of these turtles to let them free. Now even me not knowing about the se turtles I knewthat letting them go was not a good idea. first of all they are so tiny they would never survive. I then called my vet and talked to her. aShe handles all animals so I figured if anyone would know she would. I then asked her if keeping this turtle was a big deal. she said no , as long as you take care of it properly and wash your hands after you touch any part of the turtle or the tank you will be fine. no big deal. We now have had Kermie ( thats what my 3 year old son named him ) for a while and i just love him. I would do the same thing i did and call your local FDA office. The health department gave me the number so if you can not find the number try the local health department. and dont give up !!!! I didnt and I feel alot better knowing that i shut them down. when the FDA called back she had told me that there was alrady 2 confirmed cases of salamanella poisoning at childrens hospital and possibly more that wasnt confirmed yet. I look at my son and just said no way that could have been him so I did what any mother would of. please let me know what happens and like I said call the FDA they will take care of it right away. Good luck !!!!!

Thank you so much Michelle. Your story sounds just like mine. Except the place I bought my turtle had me sign something stating it was for educational purposes. That is the loophole they use. But I am going to call the FDA and tell them everything. I will let you know the outcome.

I also know how you feel about your turtle, I could never imagine letting it go. I am also so fortunate to have found this forum.

Thank you Thankyou Thank you
