General Care Discussion :: Going on Vacation. Tips?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

This winter break I will be going home for Christmas and it looks like my turtle may be by himself for about a week. I am thinking about getting a timer for the lights, and also had questions on an automatic fish feeder, filled with pellets.

Any comments?

A timer for the lights is good for even when you're around. I think some other people have used an automatic feeder - perhaps someone with experience will comment. It sounds like a good idea.

Will there are anyone around who could look in on your turtle and make sure the filter and lights are working properly while you're gone?

I used a automatic fish feeder to feed my fish on my last vacation. It didn't feed them as much as I did but it still worked. Just make sure to stick a brand new set of battery's in it because mine went dead before I got back.

Also, make sure it can handle pellets, most will jam if filled with something besides fish flakes.

Get some water plants the day before you go. Water lettuce & water hyacinth are both great in my tank & the turts LOVELOVELOVE to eat the roots. Anacharis would last too. I'd also get some feeder fish & put them in there the day you leave. I'd say the auto timer for the lights is a must.

Boy will he be happy to see you when you return! :-)
