General Care Discussion :: Uvb Light Question! Help

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I bought a light fixture for my turtle tank which is perfect, but it had a Plastic cover in front of the light...which I just found out BLOCKS out the UVB/UVA rays!

My RES is new and has had the New Light with the cover for 4 days today, Which I just found out has been producing NO UVA/UVB because of that cover.

Would you say it has done any damage to my new turt not having the UVA/UVB for 4 days?

:( :?

Chris bar -- If your turtle was healthy when you started he will be ok, however. I would try and get the proper light and heat as soon as you can. You will have to engineer around the plastic. Glass will not let the uvb light through either. They have to have the direct rays from the bulb or tube. You will need to clean it off every few weeks of so to keep the uvb rays coming through properly. When mine get in a feeding frenzy they splash water every-where. -- Good Luck!!

Thank you!
The light is set up now so that it is direct. :)

Also the turt was very healthy when I got him.

no damage is done to your turt. if he hasnt had good lighting or heating for like a couple of weeks then yes it would of hurt him. like mikee said try to work around the plastic and everything should be fine.

a couple weeks without the UVB isn't a problem. it's more of a long-term care requirement.

I got a similar light fixture for one of my setups. I just cut the glass from the fixture so that there's nothing between the turtle and bulb now.

Nope, no damage done. It should be fine. Remember that in the wild it is not always sunny. :)
