doubt it. The motors are usually hermetically sealed, so you'd have to either order a replacement motor or replace the entire top housing unit.

Unlike H.O.T. filters, canister filters don't run dry (unless somehow the water leaks out of the canister). But you did say that the intake was knocked off, which could mean that the motor was sucking air until it burned itself out.

Were you able to figure out what's wrong? If not, do you still have the materials that came with the filter? Rena's number is somewhere in them; I'd call the mfgr. and see if they can help. Good luck.

I haven't figured out the problem yet, but I'll look into getting a replacement part. That's probably the only thing I can do.

Edit: Oh dear lord, a replacement motor for the XP2 is about $80. I've had it for just over a year, so I doubt it'll be covered under warranty, but I don't have a receipt or anything, anyway.

Call the manufacturer and tell that you are unhappy and you want them to do something for you. They are not stupid and they know that forums like this one will have an impact on their sales and reputation. Better still, try the pet shop as most manufacturers will replace them for the shops. For the most part they should help you for the good will. When I have good service I say so, when I have lousy service I say so, loudly.
