General Care Discussion :: Anyone else worry too much .

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sun May 18, 2008 9:03 pm   Anyone else worry too much .

After I lost Mr. T I find my self worrying a whole a lot. Does anyone else worry too much.

I mean this is how much I worry. A few days ago I asked about Spaz staying on land to much , now I was about to ask the question .

Spaz is spending all his time half way in and half way out the water

:D And I just look at it an say I need to cool it lol.

Joe-smooth -- Before you worry too much check proper water and basking temps, proper lights and filtration first.

Okay, I already know how this is going to come off, but don't take it the wrong way. As long as you are providing the best you can for them, ultimately it is up to the turtle and nature for the turtle to survive. As humans, we sometimes take too much care of animals and humans that "evolution" would otherwise find unsuited for reproduction. Take for example my sweet little cat, I love her and she's my baby, but goodness, if I weren't taking care of her, she wouldn't survive this world! She refuses to eat anything but cat food (like meat table scraps), she certainly would never manage to catch and eat anything (her idea of stalking is sad and she'd rather play with mice than kill them), and she walks into walls ...

So your turtle will take care of itself, get as much basking or swimming as it needs, as long as you provide the best you can. It's okay to be concerned, but not to be so focused on your turtle that you worry about every behavior.

I recommend reading every post you can on here. That way, if you see what behaviors are common and uncommon, you'll be ready for any surprises.

I have 2 120 gallon tanks and I thought they were big but they get small fast. If you are going to get a 100+ tank check out the price of a 200+ they are not that much more money. I could have got a 235 X_Tall for only $150 more but at the time I had no clue. Plus now with cgaigslist even better deals.

I worry constantly...but then I am being treated for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. :P The pills help, but I still worry. My pets happen to be one of my obsessions. I have to check and double check that they are all still in their cages/tanks. I have to touch the latches sometimes. I have reoccuring nightmares where I have even more pets then I have now, and they are all sick and all escape and hide in my house....

Just today when I came home from work I found Sylar asleep on his dock. His body was on the dock but the front of his face was in the water! It scared the heck out of me, I immediately thought he was dead. When I freaked he looked at me like I was nuts and jumped in the water. I think he's tired of me waking him up just to check to see if he is alive. I guess if you worry too much, then I am a BASKETCASE!

I worry that I'm going to wake up to one and a half turtles as one is eating the half.

Being a new turtle owner I worry about everything. Every little behavior I worry about. In fact this morning one of my turtles was on the basking dock with his leg raied in the air and I thought for a second it was broken. He was just raising it I guess to stretch or whatever but its fine!!

It's ok to worry, but don't let it consume you. While agree with Gremlin on not getting to attached, it is hard not too. I have had numerous pets when I was younger, six cats when I was single. Finally the day came when I had to give them away. It was hard but I got over it.

Oh, I get attached to my pets like crazy. I just had a cat die on me after less than four years and that was the hardest. Like my previous cat was put to sleep after 13 years and so we had time to cope with her passing. But the one that died suddenly caught me off guard. I think that since I've had my turtle for 6 months, I'm getting attached, but he is my first turtle. Meanwhile, I bet once I hit the 10-15 year mark, I'll be completely crazy over making sure he's fine. Even as it is, I'm more worried about the cats taking the light fixtures with them into the tank that they'll electrocute themselves. I guess I just accept that with a turtle tank, there are a lot of things that are potentially out of my control.

I definitely over-worry about all my pets.
Since Sheldon is my first turtle, I find myself really overly stressed about his well-being, I mean with my dogs & cats - I know the signs, they cry, wimper, limp, moan, etc - - I can figure things out - - I have had insulin dependant diabetic dogs and even had to administer CPR on one of my dogs!

But with the turtle, heck, he doesn't tell me ANYTHING! So I study him and read up on behaviors....AAArrrggghhhHHH! I gotta check on Sheldon! LOL!

Oh I worry all the time. If I happen to glance over at the babies tank and I only see one baby I start freaking out and run over there only to find him swimming up to me as fast as he can! I get really paranoid about my animals and them getting sick or being sick. I once took my duck to the vet because he was losing feathers... I felt like a real fool when I walked in and the vet started laughing, "He is molting Angela, its perfectly fine."
