Maybe you could get store credit, but I highly doubt that because you could be coming in there with a year old bulb that broke, not a 3 month old one, they don't know. So they'd likely say no, but no harm in saying your story and seeing if they will cave I guess.

Start saving your receipts for starters to help with returns or credits. Next is it the same type of bulb or different? Have you contacted the store immediately? All this can help you out in recovering your money in some manner.

Actually, I had a bulb that burned out in a few days and when I mentioned it to the kid at petsmart, he said they would take it back (but I had already thrown it out). If got it at petsmart or petco or something, I'd give it a try. I have taken all KINDS of things back to both places, and they have NEVER said no. If you don't have a receipt, they give you store credit.

Yeah, I took mine back to PetSmart without a receipt and they just replaced it for me. They didn't care, they said they just sent the bulb back to the manufacturer, so they weren't out anything. I had the same thing happen, I bought two and within two months, one went out.

petco has also been very good at taking things back without receipts..

when we realized that those dumb little basking spot lights didn't have uvb in them, even though we had bought three at a time on sale, they took them back about 3 months later... we said that they had been bad for the turtle's shell, and they were fine with taking them back.

I think I read on this site not to touch the swirly part of the bulb. Only touch the base. My first one burned out in 2 months and with the replacement I only touched the base. The replacement bulb has been working for 5 months now.

Yeah they guarantee some fish for up to 24 hours to ensure live arrival. Funny, they only do it with cheap fish, If you look at the Koi, fancy goldfish, etc. they don't have a guarantee. They would cost too much for petco/petsmart to replace.

Touching the bulb only matters with halogen lights. If you touch a halogen bulb, the oil from your skin will cause the glass to break when turned on.

But if you wanted to be cautious, a rubber glove is the way to go.

Petsmart has always exchanged bulbs for me. In my case I think I had a faulty fixture because it burned through 4 reptiglo 5.0s in 4 months, while I've used those bulbs for over 6 months with no problem in other fixtures. Anyway, petsmart didn't require a receipt, but they did take back the busted bulbs.
