I just bought the babies some fake duckweed from the pet store (the plastic floating kind) and it just occured to me that the little pieces may be small enough for them to eat.... should I take it out? They don't seem to care about it being in there, they aren't biting at it or anything.

I think should be ok cuz is plastic and they can't bite it and yet they ignore it aight.. but my duckweed is real and my turtles sometimes bite the bottom part of leaves and sounds crunchy.. huhuhu.. must be taste good.. hehe..

plastic duckweed?.... are they in small separate pieces or in one big floating mass? Can you post a picture of it?

i have some of that.

i got it at petsmart.
it's really a great touch to any aquarium.


my turtles havnt tried to eat any of it yet :]

I got it at petsmart too. Some of it is pieced together but there are individual pieces. I will try to get a picture later.

I've seen this stuff in petstores in the past, but haven't noticed it being sold anywhere lately. It looks nice, but I passed on it for the very reason you've mentioned--- the pieces are very small. There may not be a problem with eating it if the pieces remain intact, however, the leaves on most of the plastic plants I've bought eventually break off, and I didn't want to chance anything that small floating around the tank.

I bought that stuff, cause I didn't realize it was all seperate peices. When I opened it up and looked at the tiny parts (it looked as if my 2.5 in turtle could swallow them whole) I decided not to use it. petsmart actually took it back, even though it was open. I opted for one of those BIG foating plants that are all one peice they sell at petsmart instead. I think Sylar Likes it better anyway, cause sit on it in the water.

Petco has a floating grass for fish fry. It comes in two large pieces that have three cluster of grass a piece. The look is ok to me (dont love it) but Tuck does. He likes to hide in it and even pushes the clusters around the tank. It is also reasonably prices too. You'd think from the price that some of those plastic plants must be made of gold.

I would like one of those big floating plants but $15 is not in my budget for plastic plants. I am thinking of getting them some real plants and see how they like them. I am just dredding the snail infestation...

Over time, real plants would probably cost you more than buying a plastic plant. Have you looked at on-line prices? If/when you need to order a bunch of supplies, adding a plastic plant to the mix wouldn't add all that much to the total.

I probably wouldn't buy live plants too often. When I tried them with Nyx she just shredded them and made a disaster of her tank. I figured I would give the babies a chance to see if they would eat them or not and if they did I would give them as a treat maybe once a month or try to grow my own...
I haven't looked lately at plastic plant prices online, I should though.
