my turtle that a got from a pet store had always been outgoing, i guess because it has lived in a people/store environment before i got it. this turtle died a short while ago...possibly from ingestion of a woodchip of borate treated lumber, used to build the pond itself...

the three turtrles that i got from my grandma's friend, which i really didnt want in the first place because i already had enough on my hands, are extremely timid and shy. they wont eat, bask, or swim around when someone comes by; one of them i had for a year. i keep them in a big 8 by 4 pond outside, and all they do is hide underneath bricks inside, out of sight.

what can i do to make these turtles, who hide all the time, to come out and be comfortable?
and do you find that storebought turtles are less shy?

how long ago did you get the 3 turtles? they might need some time to adjust if you just got them. and sliders are known to "slide" off of their basking spot when someone walks by. give them at least a week and see if they turn around. you could also try to hand feed them and see if that makes them a little more sociable.

Yess~! I totally agree with you Turtlebiz =)

Even though I had my turtles for two years, the female is still shy, when I walks nearby at the pool.. she will slide off from the basking driftwood.. urgh...

First, make sure the temperatures are correct. Secondly, some turtles are always shy. They might come out of their shell (pardon the pun) the longer you have them. But to get that to happen you'll have to get them to trust you be interacting with them on a daily basis.

Crush was an extremely shy turtle, he wouldn't even eat if he knew we were watching. When we moved the area lost power for a few days and he had to go outside, he had to trust us that nothing bad will happen. Now his tank is in the living room and he seems to be getting better. He just won't bask if he sees you for more then a minute. Before he wouldn't do ANYTHING in front of us.

So if you can try changing where the turtle is?
