Haha nice. That egg crate is wonderful stuff.

Two things though:
1 - I would put a 1-inch wide wall on the side with the ramp. Your turtle may be able to reach out and grab the tank rim, then escape. This is what I mean, from a top view:
Code: Select all
Before:         After:
|------        |------|
|              |
|------        |------|

2 - I can't see if you have done this, but you should cut holes for the lights. Egg crate is a light diffuser, and will absorb and scatter UV rays.

Yes egg crate is wonderfull :). I do have egg crate alond the side of the tank but i took it off for the pic. As for the uvb bulb i did cut a hole so the bulb could go through because it sticks out

Looks good. Is the ramp wide enough for your turt to go up?
My only other thought is to extend the sides of the box. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but a turtle with a good reach could grab the edge of the tank and pull him/herself out... (At least it looks like they might be able to)

Cool! I bet that was cheap and easy to make! I may do mine like that, except put tile for the base instead of eggcrate and reptile carpet. You have the same log in your tank as me! Also is that filter a Marineland 350b?

The Marineland 350b is the kind I have in my 53 gallon, and the first week I had it the water turned cloudy in 4 days. Now it's been a week and a day since I changed 25% of the water an it's still clear. But still any canister filter is better than a hang on one.

Must of been old stuff in there that made it cloudy. My filter is doing alright, it keeps it fairly clean.

I have to respectifully disagree with you. A properly maintained side-hanging filter can perform just as well as, or possibly better than, a canister filter.

The key, as with any type of filter, is ensuring that it has been sized properly (for flow rate, etc) for the intended usage. Canisters typically can filter much larger quantities of water because of their design, but that does not necessarily make them 'better'.
