General Care Discussion :: blackish coloration on ears

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sun Sep 28, 2008 2:41 am   blackish coloration on ears

I have an RES that I rescued from poor care. When I got him he had a lot of fungus growing on his shell and his shell was getting soft. I managed to take care of the shell issue, and he seems very healthy, but there is a black discoloration on his ears. The front of his ears are kind of a pale red and as they go back it turns in a gradient to more of a black color. Is this normal? Should I be worried, other than the black spot he seems to be a very healthy turtle.

Pics will definitely help.

RES have different coloured "ears", and the colour can range from a light orange to a very dark olive colour, but a picture will help identify.

Both my RES have sort of a greyish spot over their red streaks. As mentioned, a pic will be helpful for comparison.

Looks OK to me. His hood is covering most of the red spot, though. He may just be dark.

The ear area looks OK from what I can see.
