General Care Discussion :: Just changed the water. now 2 of my fish died .

It is kind of cold and I had the fish outside for a few mins, could that have killed them . I ask here because the last time I had a fish pass away my turtle got sick .

Did you use a dechlorinator? Even a small amount of chlorine can kill a fish.
Fish are also very sensitive to temperature changes, so if the new water was warmer or cooler than the previous water, that could kill them as well.

As a precaution, keep an eye on your turt for unusual behaviours.

I don't have chlorine in my water, and the temp changed for them like 3 times . First in the upper 70s for what they normal swim in , than in the 50 or 60s from being outside and than in the lower 80s with the new change .

fish are cold blooded. but for some reason the water i use is pretty cold and i leave them in there for 2 hours and their fine and the water is from the tap and theres less than an inch. i dont see what the problem with you is though idk

They where in top water in the cold outside lol. The thing that I had them in was leaking and i just ran it out side with it. Now that I think about it I should have ran to the tub.

I nearly froze my betta to death and he came back after about 4 hours. We had him in the car, the temps dropped near to 40 degrees, he was completely dead as far as I could tell, and I just let him sit there for 4 hours at room temp of 70-75 and he came to. I'm not saying your fish weren't killed from the cold, but I'd look at other possibilities. You said you had them in tap water, tap water has chlorine, even if you don't think so.

When moving fish in the future like that put them in a bag like a fish store does and then before you put them back in float the bag in the tank water for about 30 mins so the temp between tank and bag water equalizes then you can dump them in without fear of shocking them to death.

Your well water may be treated with something. Does the well belong to your family? If so, ask your parents if chemicals are added to the well water.

Most waters have chlorine in it, you should still use a water conditioner either way..

My in-laws treat their well every few months by literally dumping bleach in it. Mind you, they don't drink the water, but they bath and wash dishes with it. It would depend on what the well owners do. Also, since you are on a well, it may have a random contaminant that has leaked in from the ground water, like pesticides. I would suspect if you are on a well, the water should be checked frequently.
