Yeah 40ppm nitrate is when you should definitely do a change. I change my water when it gets to about 20-30ppm.

just tested my nitrates again and it is still at 40. i'll do another water change today but is there anything else i can do that will lower nitrates? something like cleaning some of the bio media in tap water?

Cleaning some of the biomedia would do basically nothing. The bacteria that live in the biomedia are what turn ammonia into nitrite, then nitrate. So you may get a bit of an ammonia spike if you clean the biomedia, but not likely, since the bacteria that's in the rest of the media would quickly recolonize the new media.

Yeah, plants will do wonders for your nitrates. (I forgot to mention that! Sorry!). That is, if you can prevent your guy from eating them all

A while ago, I had a lovely green algae farm growing on Ralph's sleeping platform, and I was really surprised when I tested the nitrates some 4 weeks after my last water change, and they were still low! But I ended up scrubbing it off :/
