General Care Discussion :: Hatchling rubbing eye

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

About a month ago my hatchling's eyes were swollen shut due to a bad UVB lamp. I detoxed the turt and then started using a UVB lamp reccomended by users from this forum. Today while my hatchling was basking I noticed he/she was rubbing her left eye with her front foot repeatedly. The eye does not look irritated or swollen or any different from the other eye. Should I try using eye drops? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

i never heard of it before so i dont want to make any wrong suggestions. so its nice to know your taking immediate action. look at it closely and see if theres any signs of it getting swollen or anything like that. by your story it sounds like he still recovering from his swollen eyes so maybe it still could be irritated right now so maybe you should put some eye drops and see if things change

I remember the hatchling doing the same thing when his/her eyes were swollen shut however I haven't noticed it in the last month although I honestly almost never see the turt basking since I'm gone during the day...and if I approach the turt while it's basking it jumps into the water! While swimming I never see any eye rubbing. Sometimes when Tilly is basking she'll go to the side of the platform and dip her head in the water and then continue to bask.

It could be nothing, rubbing eyes while basking is not necessarily a symptom of anything.

Sometimes they take naps while basking and rub their eyes when they wake up. Maybe you caught her waking up?

Henry rubs his eyes sometimes and it's always while basking, he (she) is in great health so I never think anything of it

The eyelid could have become dry from basking. It doesn't sound like a problem in and of itself.
