How do you guys/gals think this would work with sand? I know a few people in here have had/are having algae blooms in their sand.

It would work, you'd just have to be careful as to not get sand up in the motor. some people have the more expensive eheim vac and it works well i guess. I personally wouldn't waste my money on it and just stick with stirring the sand and the occasional sucking out some sand with a siphon.

When I get an algae bloom in my sand I just remove the infected sand via siphon and then throw it away. Wash new and put it back in. It's worked for me so far. I could always boil the sand to kill the cyanobacteria(Blue green algae) that grows on it but I'm too lazy to do that when sand is so cheap.

I agree, if you're not lazy then do what Chris does. If you are lazy then don't put sand, unless you can stand seeing the sand all green and brown from algae bloom. I couldn't so I took out the sand. It is nice though

I must be one of the VERY lucky people not to get algea of any kind on their sand, tank walls, or fake plants. Only place there is any "noticable" algea is on the filter lip that's underwater, and the basking dock part that's underwater. Lucky me!

i stir the sand everytime a do a partial water change. never have had algae in my sand. i do get a slime build up in my tubes though.

I get lazy and forget to stir my sand occasionally. my lighting for my tank also grows algae like a mother.. coralife 36" 10,000K.

Lol. I know. I like to enjoy my tank with proper lighting for viewing though. So extra maintenance is worth the extra enjoyment I get from the tank.

Ya... I hear ya! LOL! I put one of those lamps that can hold like 3 bulbs and I angled them to where they brighten up the side that the basking areas not at. It works for what I need it for.
