My vet has given me an ointment for my turtles' eyes about 2 weeks ago. I thought I should be seeing an improvement by now. Does anyone know if I should continue using the ointment and for how much longer?

My vet said I should go ahead and use it until they have completely recovered and even a few days after. If I've seen any change in the past 2 weeks, their eyes are even worse.

I've read somewhere about cod liver oil. Should I give that a try instead?

Zoo Med Repti turtle eyedrops are commercially made turtle eye drops. It might work better than cod liver oil but I have not had the need to use either of them before.

What is your setup like? What type of lighting do you have, and how close are the bulbs to your turtle as he/she basks?

Yes, you can try use the cod liver oil. I've used it before for my turtle eyes where she got swollen eyes when she hatchings. It took 3 days to heal.

Before you start switching treatments, I'd call the vet and explain that you've been using the ointment (as instructed, I hope) but haven't seen any improvement. See what the vet says.

What is the ointment for?

papoopeepoo - They're in a 10 gallon tank, half filled with water. I have a basking and a UVB/UVA light about 20 cm above the basking area.

untsmurf - The eyes look swollen and they don't open them much.

I'm going to call my vet to see if I can try the cod liver oil. Couldn't get a hold of her yet because she's on vacation.

wo-peace How strong is your uvb light? Check that. It may be too strong for turtles. m.

It's 13 W. I thought that might be the cause so I kept it off for about 3 days but there was no change. Do you think it's too strong? For the past week I've been keeping it on for only a few hours each day just to be on the safe side.
