as a footnote to this story I was at my vets and was approached with the information that they had 2 adult 10+ RES in back due to be well "gulp" put to death..... anyhow after hours of consideration I said I would take the male and try him in with the one that was being bitten in the first post and after hours of watching them together they were fine together so another 4 hour think and a long discussion with my wife we decided to get another setup for the female but we decided to just try her together with the agressve boy but the second she hit the water it was nip nip nip and even before I could get her out of the water she had a graze on the neck (dont worry the graze is fine and am treating it with gel) anyhow....... we put her in our trusty tote box for a few hours and began to build a new setup so a total of 3 setups (the place sounds like a aquarium now) anyhow its nearly midnight and im tired just thought the readers would like to know that it is wise to consider another setup as a backup before you add a new RES

as a footnote im at my max for turtles so if the vet gets anymore she will have to just put them to sleep or find room in her house!!!!!! after seeing them I just could not let them go to the needle

Something about this bothers me. First of all, I wish the vet would make more effort to find the turtles homes. Secondly, the aggressive male that you have... Stop putting turtles near him. You keep putting that female with him, this is about the third time you've done it, and it isn't fair to either of them. Even if it is a minor scrape, you've allowed her to get hurt. Be a responsible pet owner, and keep other turtles away from him.If he wanted to share a tank with someone, he wouldn't have come after the female.

first off this was the second time to see if he would get allong with a placid older turtle... reasonable thought

second the scrape was fast to happen, even before i expected.... i expect this agression to change with time and age and in 1 years time this turtle may love others

third the vet did try to home them.... hence they are.....

id also like to add about the vets, a couple was going to pay to have them put down and she did offer to find a home, hence when I was told the story my heart went out to them.... now my vet knows me personaly and knows how I care for my pets and thought i might help..... I figured i could make room in my sizable home for 2 more

for those who think im crazy taking in the turtles, im blessed to work from home and myself and my wife are at home nearly around the clock and spend that free time with our over spoiled pets and son......

Before you expected? Are you kidding me? If he acted aggressive the first time, what made you think he would not do it again?

I don't think he's going to simply chill out over time. Turtle don't need to live with other turtles. Some turtles enjoy the company of other turtles, and some do not. Your male obviously does not enjoy the company of other turtles.

this time was a different turtle, a much older one and its reasonable to give it a try

also turtles do mellow / change with age and the younger are more agressive in all ways but im sure you knew that already... perhaps not....

Well you never said it was a different turtle, not clearly at least.

sorry, i forgot to make it clear...

it seems all 4 are agressive and some moreso than others but the older turtles are better together but will also nip each other

I have noticed when put together you will get one that gets nipped and one who gives and if you switch them around you may have the one being nipped as the agressive one so again I say they are all agressive

My old female even nipped

i say no RES together

in conclusion RES do not get allong with other RES.... ever

and all my turtles are in seperate cages and I sugggest never to put a res together with another res

all 4 are were agressive and I have found a alternitive home for 1 of the turtles i had, he should have a good life where he went

you know its funny how the turtle that was being bullied in one situation was the bully in another situation but I still come to the conclusion res will not get allong and even if it seems all rosy with them you will find one day that there is a problem...
