We're in the process of setting up our new tank. We're making an ATBA with egg crate. Making the lid of egg crate also. Will the egg crate diffuse the benefit of the lights? Do we have to cut a hole in there?

Eggcrate's holes are large enough to let UVB rays through. However, if you want
maximum effect, cut a hole right under the UVB bulb. That's what most people
who use eggcrates do, I think.

Yup, Kemul said it all.
On my egg crate basking area, I didn't cut out a hole for the lights, and never had a problem (but the bulb is far enough away from the egg crate so it doesn't melt).

usually people will cut holes in their egg crate only if they sit their lamp fixture right on the eggcrate. the cut is made to avoid melting the eggcrate with the bulb.

At most hardware stores egg crate is about $10-12 for a 2'x4' sheet.
