General Care Discussion :: Yawn?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Yesterday I was told that my turtle was at the bottom of the tank getting ready to sleep by the plants and he opened his mouth really wide for no reason. It apparently resembled yawning.

I've never heard of this before? Can they yawn?

He shows no signs of a respiratory infection but I am scared that could be one

I think they can yawn.

I've seen mine do it a few times, I see mine yawn on the dock alot more than I see them yawn in the water though.

Yes, they do yawn. I've seen mine yawn above the water and under the water. In fact, I've seen my RES scratch an itch with the back of their paws (avoiding the long claws).

Yup, mine yawn too. My gal Frankie usually yawns in the morning when she's just waking up.

Yes, they yawn. My RES does it at night sometimes before he goes to sleep.
