Feeding and Nutrition :: So I fed my Turtles a Mouse

I was just going off of the recommendations this site has on what to feed RES. Personally I don't do live feedings, but I don't have a problem with it. Well, I do when it comes to rodents, but not fish. Just different levels of life importance on my part. I think the raw meat has disease factors that make it risky. We aren't supposed to eat raw meat either for the same reasons. The fact that turtles eat it in the wild doesn't matter. Ever wonder why our captive turtles can't survive well in the wild? Because they aren't used to the conditions wild turtles put up with. We give them a good and easy life. So just like a human that isn't used to harsh conditions or uncooked food, a captive kept turtle isn't used to such things either.

Either he feeds his turtle the mouse or it gets purchased for a snake..a pacman frog you name it

its going to be eaten.

I wouldnt feed my turtle a mouse because i dont have the heart to do that

but i would feed my turtle some little minnows because i think the diffrent species of life is on a diffrent level for me

Heh, I believe I've stated that I have no problem w/ a SNAKE eating MICE. But feeding it to a turtle = bad idea for the turtle.

Im a bit neutral on this but i think its pretty rare you might see an slider eat an mice in the wild. I think i would rather go with frogs or fishes just to be safe for the turtle health.

How so? Because it isn't recommended for turtle consumption. They CAN eat it, but it isn't good for them very often. Then there's the raw meat factor. Even if the mouse was bred as a feeder, it may still have diseases that can harm your turtles.

Well, all I can say is you guys feeling sorry for the mice have probably never had a bad infestation of the filthy, disease-carrying, feces-spreading, electric-wire chewing, important records shredding #@#$#@.

I breed and show 2 species of birds; they have outside flights, and a very nice dutch barn. My old barn cat died, and in the time before I was able to replace him, I was overrun with mice. They chewed through tileboard, shredded insulation, destroyed wiring, and caused sickness by urinating and defecating everywhere. They went through 1/2" hardware cloth like it wasn't there. I had mousetraps, poison, glue traps, nothing really got them under control until Audra arrived - only a 6wk kitten, but a feral rescue, and within 3 wks the mice were GONE.

But the experience left me with absolute hatred for mice. One of the traps is what they call a "Tin Cat", where you can catch a bunch of them at once, but then you have to figure out how to get rid of them, because they're still alive.

We feed about 6 feral cats around here........when they see me coming with the tin cat, they all come running; I open the trap, and its like watching that film "The Running Man"

Hey, at least I'm not drowning them, which is what they suggest on the box. I've seen at least one get away.

I have to agree with worldpeace on this one, sure, it's probably not the best taste for sinister to post videos of his turtles killing mice, but inhumane?! come on people, we all keep non-domesticated reptiles trapped in small glass boxes for the majority of their lives, and to feed them many of us take other live animals for the sole purpose of being nutrition for the non-domesticated reptiles we keep locked inside glass boxes. One mans pet is another mans meal. I raised calves for 4H when I was a kid, from a little baby calf all the way up to a steer, then we killed it and BBQed it. I think it is really hypocritical when people say things like, "well I understand a feeder fish but a mouse?!" They are both animals, both lifeforms. To value one over the other is just ludicris, to come down on sinister because "you used to own mice" is just judgmental. Tuna nets kill dolphins, bet that doesn't stop you from feeding your turtles chicken of the sea does it?

^^ I dont think there is anything with feeding feeder mice to turtles. There ither going to get squeezed to death by a Snake, Riped apart by a Monitor, Eaten by a Bigger Turtle then mine...99% chance all the mice you see in pet shops will be fed to something else, not kept as a pet.
