General Care Discussion :: Overly hungry and overly eager?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sat Mar 27, 2010 8:17 pm   Overly hungry and overly eager?

My turtle suddenly became unusually active, hungry and eager to get out of her container. She was fine in the morning, but now she runs around trying to look for something. I fed her immediately, but she still wanders around. I think her environment change is affecting her behavior, but I'm not sure. Should I be worried?

When females become 4-6 Years of Age, they lay eggs. The way to tell if they are ready to lay eggs is they will continuously try to get out of there tank and wont settle down at all. What you would want to do if this is the case is get a box or something and put some soil in it and let her dig a few hours a day untill she lays her eggs, this can take up to a month or more for her to lay and can happen about 2 times a year.

if you do not allow her to lay eggs it can get her really sick if she becomes egg bound.

If shes just hungry just try to feed 1-2 times a day. RES will eat anything you put in there tank and can eat them self to death like a fish. Over feeding is a big problem in aquatic turtles and can lead to health problems/pyramiding in the shell/other stuff.

What change did she have in her environment? Was she responsive to you when she was very active?

I had to put her out of tank for a while because her leg was hurt. Plus I put her in a new tank, so I think that change in environment did something to her. She's still "swimming" into tank walls, but she's more relaxed compared to other days.

The change in environment will cause a change in behavior for a while, but if she does not quiet down in a week or so I would check into the egg issue.

Does this mean that females lay eggs without a male partner?

Yes, it does---just like chickens. The eggs just won't be fertile.

2 - roughly 2 times a Year.
3 - its recommended to NOT breed RES since there population is over limit and there are more turtles out there looking for a good home then there should be. People say to other just throw away the eggs or boil them and then throw them away so none hatch in some dump field somewhere. DO NOT BREED YOUR TURTLES! ^^
