Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Wed Sep 01, 2010 12:38 am   she sleeps, and sleeps. and doesn't bask (concerning me alot

all shes doing is sleeping and if i get close she wakes up then swims then sleeps.(in really funny positions i dont know if its the famous res sleep or not but its hilarious.)
she doesnt bask at all anymore.
she eats fine.
waters clean.
she doesnt look/act sick
comes up for air regularly.
what is going on?

she stopped basking like 2-3 weeks ago maybe even a month now.(which is really concerning me)
i put her in dry tank to keep her getting dry.

but why does she sleep so much?
because shes old and not curious of surroundings anymore? (which im fine with lol)

shes currently in a temp tank 20g because i had to reseal my 55g but shes only been in for 1 day so dont say thats the problem
she also has a pleco with her as well 12" dunno if that could effect it.

i could post pics on how far the light is and the uvb.(which she never basks when i have the uvb on) if you want.
but if there is any other info you need i can provide it.

How big is your turtle? 6" (i believe she is full grown)
How long have you had it? about 4 months

What is the water temperature? 75

Are you using a water heater? yes (finely)
How much water is in there? 40g
Are you using a water conditioner? yes
Are you using any filtration? yes

What is the basking temperature? 90-100 (i need to move it up higher or something it reached over 110 once like she basked when it was on the side of the tank for a while and i never knew how hot it was but now that i think about it it had to be over 110 because when it was on the side of the tank farther from where i had it before it was about 110 but idk haha sorry such a run on sentence ;D )
Is there a basking light? yes
Is there a basking platform that is easy to climb on? yes
What kind is it or what is it made out of? zoo med medium
Is there a UVB light? yep

What have you been trying to feed it? romaine lettuce(im starting to grow my own hydroponically(all organic nutrients)) and pellets every other day for pellets and romaine everyday (sometimes snacks like grapes and other fruit)
When was the last time your turtle ate? this morning about 4 pellets

How big is the tank/pond/enclosure? 55g
Is the tank near a window? nope
Is the tank in a room with a lot of activity? kind of, our bedroom. but we are either working or on the computer so not really.

Have you read the Basic Care section? yep
Have you searched the forums for similar situations? eh. kinda not really. :)

Is there any other unusual activity/symptoms? the same thing with her shell read my other post. :P

nope never went to the vet. doesnt seem to be getting any worse. i check on her all the time im going to put treats for her on the dock maybe tuna? or will the light make it all gross lol. maybe she is going up there when im not there because she used to jump off when i came in the room and then sneak up when i wasnt looking so maybe shes just being really sneaky i put some pellets up there and i want to know if i can use tuna.
but idk why she sleeps idk if shes actually dead asleep or just resting her eyes.
she always pokes her head out to look at me though.
the only problem is one day the clamp lamp got way to close for a long time and actually burned the dock. like theres a spot about inch by inch.

oh wait actually one night when i was watching a movie which was the only time in the last 4 weeks i heard her do it was she actually got on the dock and then RIGHT back off.
haven't heard/seen her do it since or at all before that.
could the shell issue i thought was really bad doesnt seem to bad, be making her "sick" and not want to go up there. even though
she acts exactly like when we got her, (skittish and shy, nothing to worry about just scared) but just not basking.
thanks for any suggestions sorry this post is so long haha

i put seven pellets up there before i went to work and now there are zero.
i dont know if she ate them or moved the dock and they fell off or what but
i know that they are gone and she ate them lol.
i should set up a camera before i go to work and actually watch what she does?
but at least i know that she MIGHT have been up there but i didnt have the uvb on.
so i will put it on and put pellets up there and video tape it while im at work tomorrow i think that would be cool.
spying on my turtle lol.
see what the secret turtle life is actually like lol.

My concern would be that there is an internal infection, making it difficult to determine what it is without tests.

yeah if i went and got a "diagnostics" does that include that stuff. its only 55 at this one vet and i dont have the money to drop on a lot of random tests that might not prove anything
