I made these last week and after a few days of trying, he's finally eating them! like ive said in other posts, my turtle only has one eye so it takes some time for him to find food when its in there, especially when its something that sinks to the bottom. but they float after i freeze them so when they're above him its much easier for him to find it. I'm relieved that he'll eat them, because all he would eat before was pellets, carrots and river shrimp. wouldnt touch any type of greens or squash even. When i made them, i was mostly green leaf lettuce, some romaine, a small yellow squash, a handful of shredded carrot, a very very small sweet potato, a few green beans, water from a can of tuna, plus a small amount of flaked tuna, some crushed up reptomin and some calcium powder. I also added a little but more tuna after it was all pureed so that he'd be more likely to eat it, i will not use much next time. and i also topped it with some of the food we feed our koi, because he seemed to love that when he was in our pond (even though we fed him reptomin too) so i was hoping that he'd like it. well, he did. i could only find skull and pumpkin shaped ice trays in the dollar store, so here they are.: Image

the smell of these things is pretty terrible though lol

Looks good lol. The smell is probably the tuna... once you reduce that content, it should smell better.

very cool for halloween. my fingers always smell after I feed my girls. I hand feed them. I think it is the tuna like steve said.

How often should you feed them the jello shots? like once a week or month or is it safe for every other day like normal food?

I found the gelatin mix right in the same area as the jello products. I feed Kodi 1 cube every 2-3 days others feed theirs more often or so. The first bit of the batch i made i put in the fridge to be eaten and the rest i froze, once i ran out of the batch in the fridge i've just been giving them to Kodi frozen, it doesn't take long for them to start to thaw once they are in the feeding dish and she seems to like eating them when they are partially frozen.

I really want to try these for Bowser!
A few questions that I'm sure have been asked and answered already but I'm feeling lazy and want to ask anyway...

Which recipe is the preferred, the new one or the old one?
And why is that?

How much does one batch make?

It's okay for turtles to eat gelatin?

Is it okay to feed this everyday or most days?

the improved recipe is for shell maintenance ex. not shedding properly and the original im not sure.
but i also want to know how often to feed it.
jaysea so you feed it when frozen and just throw in it their feeding container?

I made the newer recipe because Kodi will not even touch cuddlebone or blueberries and is in need of a shed, so those items were in the new recipe.

@ Leopard167 - i usually put Kodi in her feeding bowl then put the cube in there with her, she will run up and bite off it sometimes i have to hold it for her so she can grab chunks otherwise it floats away from her. Once it softens up a bit, which really takes all of like 2 minutes i cut what she hasn't eaten into bite size pieces. I take water from the aquarium to put in her feeding bowl so the water is about 75 degrees, so that frozen cube doesn't stay rock hard for very long. I've seen people post in this thread they give 1 cube everyday, some every other day and some people do a few cubes every few days. I feed Kodi hers 1 cube every 2-3 days. I also keep a piece of lettuce in her tank on a veggie clip just in case she gets hungry in between, but she doesn't touch it....she's an extremely picky eater lol.

@ Ashley - my one batch made 28 full icecubes....so enough to last me quite awhile. I just froze them and give them to Kodi that way. Some people feed these everyday as the solo food source and some do it every 2 or 3 days. You can rotate days between these and normal leafy veggies and pellets. I just do shots every 2-3 days and put a fresh piece of lettuce in Kodi's tank each day in case she gets hungry for it. I also haven't noticed any negative side effects from gelatin, i think the minimal amount they are actually eating doesn't effect anything.

I will say Kodi gets a little chubby the first day after feeding, not sure if its gas or shes just full up. But usually the day after feeding she seems fat around her back legs and then later in the day or the next day shes back to normal. I'm thinking it's gas from the veggies lol.

But ya if your turtle is a picky eater or you'd like to get some veggies in their diet these shots are amazing. I was so excited when Kodi chomped these things down because I had tried everything and anything to get her to eat veggies.
