hi boonyam!

happy new year to you too!

i) carbon should be changed between 3 to 6 months, depending on the manufacturer's instruction
ii) you can leave it on for about 12 hours during daytime, and keep it off for 12 hours so that they can get some rest as well...

Hi Chteo

I tried to use a spot light as a basking light, but after a few days, it will be spoilt, so the cost is high even though it generates heat, and i have changed to normal fluorescent light (20w), but it does not generates heat, but just felt a bit warm, what do you recommend to use ?

BTW, what is the pattern / sleeping time of terrapins ?

tq

hi boonyam,

yes, indeed i missed out the question! my apologies!

as for the basking light, i'm using philip's superlux 40W and 60W (about RM 1.50 if i recall) you can also try osram 40W and 60w, which is also cheaper. as for the lamp holder itself, try to get those rated for 60W (Ikea has one) or those with ceramic base holder, otherwise the plastic will melt.

distance about 12 to 16 inches away from basking area. i switch on mine from 9am to 1pm, 2pm to 6pm, 7pm to 10pm using a timer for both basking light and UV light.

in nature itself, i'm not too sure, but i've noticed that whenever there are no lights, they'll sleep. they're quite a light sleeper too. from caresheets that i've read, most of the time they recommend 12/12 hours cycle. but it also depends on where you place your turtle. if it's in the living room with the lights on till 1am, they'll still be awake...

I keep mine in the living room but around 9 the lights go off in their tank. I have a little homemade curtain that I made out of a pillowcase that I pull around the tank (actually just the front and then I use another for the sides. They sleep as soon as I pull the curtains although Chimpy usually has been sleeping a while even with the lights on (Chimpy is a heavy sleeper).

Here's a few pics:

video to come :)
here's the video:

What I did was put a curtain rod on the front of the top of my tank. I affixed it with a twist tie and a little tape.

I then took a couple of old pillow cases and made curtains by cutting a hole in the double part of the pillowcase to get the rod thru and I cut the pilllowcase so it was one layer thick (doubling the size of the case).

I also did the same thing on one of the short sides (but I never move it and the other short side i taped turtle pictures on. The back is covered with a backing.

This makes a nice way to cover the tank when their lights go off. The top of the tank is open but they still go to sleep when their lights go off and I pull the curtains shut.

I stay up late (12,1,2,3) and this lets them sleep in the same room I am in. I used to just tape pictures and such to the tank but it didn't look to nice and was a bit of a pain.

Hi Chteo

thanks for your information, i think the shape of philip superlux is like a "bell" so i was trying to search philip's superlux in the market, but i could not find it, majority of the light bulbs are energy saving type which did not generate much heats, so i bought a tornado type, i think it is not so useful, it is a bright but with less heats

http://www.lighting.philips.com.my/apr/ ... 7/CFLi.bmp

should i buy a tornado with "warm white" type ? any recommendation ?

Hello chteo!

Thanks for sharing, this is very inspiring! I plan to make a proper basking area for my turtle out of PVC piping also. I just had a question though, did you have to glue the PVC piping together? I know PVC glue is pretty strong, so I'm thinking it's not turtle safe, right?

What kind of design do you have in mind? The PVC setup I have doesn't require glue but I do think others have used PVC cement in their setups.

I was thinking of a similar set-up as the one in this thread. My husband actually made one today though and found that he didn't need to use any glue.
