General Care Discussion :: How do I get both of my RES get along with each other?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sun Jan 30, 2011 4:03 am   How do I get both of my RES get along with each other?

I brought a new female RES today. When I put her in the tank, the male became aggressive and started to bite her feet. I immediately separate them but left them in the tank. Soon after, the male bit the female again. I decided to separate them and put the female in the bath tub. My question is how do I get both of my RES get along with each other because I want them to have company?

Yea, res that get added in at later time do not house well to together even once that were housed together all their sometimes start to fight. Males in res are very aggressive. There is really know way to stop the aggressive behavior. Im sorry to say but you probably wont ever be able to hosue them together without the risk of the male injurying the female.

I tried something similar with mine. In the summer, I put them in a kiddy pool in my backyard. They seem to be getting along okay there since it's only a few hours a day. But if I house them together inside for a few days, after the second or third day the female starts aggressing the male.I've been trying to get them to get along for over a year now and so far no success. I'm reluctant to continue trying because the male always ends up being hurt to the point where there is blood shed.

I guess you can try the tub idea but I would like to advise you that it's risky, and unless you keep a constant eye on them, you might end up with a severely hurt or even dead turtle.

How big is the tank that you are trying to house both turtles in together? If the habitat is too small, that will only encourage the aggression. Not saying that having a bigger tank will fix your problem, but having one too small with add to the problem for sure.

Having a larger tank may help a little as the aggressee can get away from the aggressor. For the most part there is nothing you can do. When you get them as hatchlings you have a better chance of them getting along. Good luck!

It's difficult to get them along together. Mine could never share 1 tank...Kroten, tho the smaller one, will always try to bite Kame or drive her out of her way.

But...at least now they can stay together when I let both of them on land. They even sleep side by side when I let them roam around the room.

I wish you a better luck with your turtles. I still keep 2 tanks for my 2 turtles

Well I have 2 female turtles, a RES and a Belize Slider.

My Res is in the pond year round, but my Belize slider is tropical so she can only go out during the summer. The last 2 summers, and this one, when I introduced my Belize, my RES got aggressive.

The last 2 years i've put both of them in a seperate containter for a few hours. They get along in there because neither feel it's their territory. When I put both of them in the pond, they're almost always fine.

You can also try redecorating your tank, them putting both of them in the tank at the same time.
