Feeding and Nutrition :: Duckweed

Turtle diets and eating habits discussed here.

Hey everyone,
I've been cutting back on the pellet food and switching to more aquatic plants for my res turtle. I feed her anacharis every other day, which she eats immediately. I also have duckweed floating in the tank. They seems to disappear a little every day. The amount of duckweed i put usually covers half the tank. On average she takes a little over a week to finish all the duckweed. My question is, am i over feeding her?

Also, I decided to look up the nutritional facts for duckweed and found it's full of protein. My turtle is about 2 years old now and i'm wondering if duckweed counts as a staple food source as i was told res turtle should eat less protein/meat when they're older. Does this mean duckweed is bad for my turt?

Duckweed is great for turtles. You have to think that it's found naturally in their enviorment.

They are really tiny little like leaves that float on the surface of the water. Here is a pic with a hatching in some, so you know its very small because that is only a hatchling.

It's the smallest flowering plant in the world.

i live in Canada and i find them in at some ponds, but you got to really search for it. I find them where cat tails block the currents from moving the duckweed

Yep, might get little extra with like larva from different insects or snails but those are all great things for a turtle to have.
