General Care Discussion :: solved my problem. with my basking spot

i have 2 red eared sliders jacob wich actually is a girl (didnt know how to tell when we named it) she is 4 1/2 inches. and just in the last week was given a verry pretty 6 1/2 female lilly. the problem was that the zoo meds medium turt doc would sinck when they both got on it. so i bought the large zoo meds turt doc. and i didnt sinc but still went under water a bit. so i was faced with haveing to put 2 basking sites when i thought why not stack them. so i have a zoo meds medium on bottom and a zoo meds large on top. and it works great. they are both on it right now and it barley moves at all and they are both bone dry. the large doc and medium doc use the same bracket. so i guess when this one starts to sinck from there weaight i will get a nother large and put it on bottom to replace the medium.

thought i would share this in case any one else was having the same problem.

I know at some point I will have this prob-I have 2 RES(2" and almost 2") and I know they will really put the weight on it when they grow somemore-I have been thinking of what to do when that time comes-can you post a pic of what yours looks like-sounds neat -glad you shared

When you get a larger tank, you can just do what I did. I used an old milk crate, turned upside down with slate rock on top. It's just a temporary fix of course, but serves it's purpose.

sorry i dont have a digital cam yet. all you do is stack 2 zoo meds turt docs on top of each other. use only one suction cup bracket. do you currently use a zoo meds dock Gracie8899. if so all you have to do is get another one and stack em.

That zoo med solution sounds rather expensive to me. Aren't those docks like $20+ each? You should take a look through the photo gallery to find how others handled this situation. I have 2 4+" turtles on my dock.. and there's room to grow..

yes it is a little on the pricy side, but if you allready own one. it is not that big of a deal. my turts love it. it takes up no swimming area.

ageing is usually a guesstmation 2 inches under one year. 3 to 4 inches a year to two. from 6 inches on is relly a guess

I'm pretty sure they are 1.5 years because when i got them they were only an inch (it was in myrtle beach)...and i guess thats the best i could do.

Thanks, it only took me a couple minutes and a saw, nails, 6 brackets and a little elbow grease. You autta give it a shot, its definatly cheaper than the turtle docks, and it's big enough to hold the turtles even if they get to be 18" (yes, impossible, i know, but )

1 in is definatly not 1 year old, they reach legal selling size (4") in about a year or so, so 1in is like, a couple months if that

EDIT: i think after 2 years, average growth is 1in a year, but they grow faster as hatchlings and yearlings
