I was just curious if someone can help me tell the gender of my turts. I have looked at several of the photos here and I just don't seem to have the knack that others have when it comes to this.

Looks female to me, especially in the 2nd pic. Can you get a pic of the front claws?

Those are two different turtles...I'll take some claw pics tomorrow and get them posted.

I'm tempted to think the first is male, the second female.

Ok, thanks! I'll post some claw pics tomorrow, as I mentioned before. Neither one seems to have exceptionally long claws though. We'll see. Thanks again!

I agree with steve, first one is male, second female. My male is nearly 2 yrs old and 4".. and his claws didn't start to lengthen until about 6 months ago, but his tail was definitely male for quite some time before that.

That's just so reassuring, lol. Knowing this information would I be better to seperate them? I was planning on trying to keep them together, however, I don't want babies, and I don't want to be tempted to keep a batch of eggs at some later point to see. I'm not a very strong person.

The second one looks female, but I'd like to see the claws of the first one. About how old do you think they are (what are the SCLs)? A female wouldn't even be ready to lay eggs until around 5 years of age/ 6-7 inches.

Both turts are right at about 4 inches...straight length and they will be a year old in May. I realize that she isn't going to be laying eggs right away, I don't even have a nesting area, I was just thinking ahead...and thinking of my budget, lol. Here's the link again, I added pictures of the claws.

The first two claw photos are of the suspected female and the last one of the male. His claws are actually longer than they appear because they look like shadows. I guess Pheobe is a Peter.

The nails in the last pic look like those of my RES, only his are even longer.
