General Care Discussion :: Help !!

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I've had to adjust mine a lot this week because I found that the position actually made the basking area way too hot; it was fine in one tank, but not fine in this one, apparently. I'd adjust it according to the temperature on the basking dock, but see what other folks say. That's just what's worked for me.

edit: Oh, mine is 100w too.

I keep mine about 12 inches give or take. Some people have thermometers on their basking platforms. I dont. I have waited while Tobi has been basking a good amount if time and touched her shell to make sure she wasnt hot, but warm. Usually if it is too hot she wont stay up to bask long, and too cool, same thing.

We got a canister filter over the weekend. It's a Cascade 1000. When the turtles get close to the intake, it sucks them up to the cage. They struggle a little to get away from it. Kind of funny to watch them, but is that normal? Don't know why they keep going over to it all the time.

As long as the cover is on, its ok. Lol i dont know whats up with turts and filters...my girl ALWAYS gets under the intake too. Loves to get her head and feet stuck and keep pulling them off. Its crazy but normal i suppose! :D

Yes, very little. Their shell is about 1 1/4 inch from head to tail. They are eating like crazy, fantastic little swimmers. It is just hilarious watching them when they get near the intake.

If it does become an issue, you can get a prefilter - which is just a sponge covering for the intake, or rig your own intake bar (made of PVC or attach a spray bar to it).

I'll keep that in mind. They are next to my computer desk, so I watch them all the time. I was hoping it wouldn't hurt their feet. I am really loving these crazy wet pets !!
