General Care Discussion :: African Sideneck only active at night? Also not eating

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Wed Jul 09, 2014 1:34 am   African Sideneck only active at night? Also not eating

My cousin recently gave me his african sideneck and I have him in his new tank. He's doing fine but my only concern is that he barely ever is moving during the day but at night he's all over the tank. This one is from petsmart and they don't have the scientific name on their tank so we don't know which type he is. Name below would be great. Also he is NEVER eating! I've had him for around a week now and he hasn't eaten a thing! He never comes to eat during feeding time. I've tried putting him in a seperate tub and everythig. I don't know what's up either because he's insanely fat. In the time my cousin had him he never ate either (a year or so). Please help!!

Correction to the end of that. He never came up at feeding time with the other turtles. But he had a ton of guppies constantly breeding and he decently lowered the population.

Not too many ASN here but a quick search indicates they might be nocturnal.

Actually I saw that too. But I also found out that it was the pelusios subniger that is noctournal. I have a pelomedusa subfrufa which are not. He also isn't eating what I offer him but I have seen him eating poop off the bottom

You might want to looking into his specific care sheet. Were there others at Petsmart? Were they acting differently?

Well their tank wasn't the best, it had barely enough water to cover their shells, in some spots, not even enough. And yes they're fairly active. I've also seen some youtube videos and things of people who have them and they look like sliders or something swimming all around the tank!

Did he behave differently when your cousin cared for him?

What's the setup like? Maybe he needs a bit more privacy?

The setup is in my bedroom. So he pretty much never sees me except at night (when his lights are off). It is pretty deep water but there are lots of spots for him to hang/rest on at the top. There is also an above tank basking dock

It sounds a bit confusing. He's in there with other turtles?

That's good to hear. Did your cousin keep him with other turtles?
