My 3 year old RES turtle seems to be needing a back scrub every 2-3 weeks because of algae. The tank and tempature and feeding is normal, or suggested by this website. My tank is located near a sunny window. I have gold fish in the tank to, but they are for food and fun. I'm almost sure that before I had the fish, I had the same problem. Any suggestions?

Is your tank near a window and how long are the tank lights on?

Having your tank near the window is contributing to the algae growth. It isn't recommended to have your turtles tank near or in direct sunlight. Besides the algae, the sun can cause the temperature of the water to spike and that can harm your turtle if it does. And your turtle isn't benefiting from any of the sunlight since glass and screen filters the UVB rays that your turtle needs.

Also, goldfish aren't good feeders to keep with your turtle. If you want to feed live prey on occasion, try rosy red minnows or guppies. Goldfish are very fatty and considered junk food.

What's the temp of the water and how often do you change the water?

I notice that the only algae I ever had a problem with was in any tank occupied by a fish or a frog. Never had this issue with a tank that ONLY had a turtle in it. Take the fish out and see if that solves the issue.

thanx alot guys, the water temp is: 25 c of 80 F

80F is a bit high for a 3 year old res. The more ideal temp would be around 75F. Does your turtle bask? What is the basking temp?

I notice that he basks when he can have a long time to do it. Like if no one is home. If he knows he will be interuptud, then he doesn't. The basking temp is 78-82 F

The basking temp needs to be a little higher. Try around 88 F... this may entice him to bask even more.
