I think that I've spent close to $350 and that is just for their setup at this stage of their life. I will need to upgrade in about a year.

sonyj wrote:I just found an awesome quote and thought it fit in so well under this post. So I thought I'd share it with you all. Hope you don't mind:

It is worth noting that a hatchling may only cost a couple of pounds or dollars or so to purchase initially, but it will cost at least 100 times its initial purchase price to maintain successfully as an adult (tank, heating & lighting equipment and filtration). This is not taking into account running costs, possible veterinary fees or feeding. At these low prices, turtles are often impulse purchases - how many people would take on this commitment if they knew what was really involved in caring for them properly?

This is from another site on caring for turtles/tortoises but I knew when I read it how true it was. It's a commitment to raise our turtles to live the long, happy, healthy lives they are supposed to live, and I guess that means we all will not be buying those really awesome shoes, or that new electronic gadget on an impulse buy in the future. :D

Maybe posting all the expenses in pet stores will deter a load of buyers. I haven't spent anything yet besides food, but it's been just over a month and this site has opened my eyes. We're budgeting for an overhaul of at the most $500, we just don't have the money to cover that kind of cost.

All in canadian dollars:

$80 for 2 turtles
$20 for a 10 gallon tank
$100 for a 40 gallon turtle tank
$140 for a stand
$25 for a 20 gallon Sting Ray filter
$70 for an Aquaclear 70 filter
$70 on Dr. Turtle products
$50 on food
$80 on an Aquarium ballast
$20 UVB Lamp
$30 ceramic light fixture
$30 on light bulbs
free decorations (from Lake Huron and the local creeks)

And, after all this money, I am thinking of getting a texas map turtle for $50. I have not made a decision yet. It is tempting, but I am not sure if i really want one. I rather have a painted turtle. Unfortunately, that is not legal here.

I'd have to say probably in the range of $1500-$2000 over the past 2 years. With all the money and work i've put into our turtles home my step-son calls it turtletopia.

You got to be kidding me, 20 dollars for a ten gallon tank, that's cheap compared to Wal-Mart (ironic). The price at the Wal-Mart for the ten gallon tank is about $50. Too bad I don't have free decorations from the creek down the road like Gokuh, the creek is so polluted you can see the wierd rainbowy colors of motor oil and whatever flows from the storm drain.
Oh, and you just wasting money on the Dr. Turtle thing, it's useless.

$20 for a 10 gallon tank is too much. A bare 10 gallon tank (no hood or screen) in every pet store near me is $10.

That's really an expensive Wal-mart you've got there. Ours here is just $10, same at Petsmart as well.

Steve, you are forgetting that I am talking Canadian dollars. That adds $2 to $4 dollars on your base price. Also, I shopped at the only pet store in a rural area. This means a big mark up.

Apple snails at this pet shop cost $3.99 a piece. Apple snales at Walmart cost $1.49. Aquaclear 70 costs $59.99 at Big Als, $89.99 here. I order at Big Al's online now!!!

haha, $150 easy, and like Sonyj said, it was an impulse buy in NYC because i felt bad for leo's conditions, but he's totally worth every penny. :)

Soon it will be a lot more money than I have ever spent on my turtle, because I am looking at upgrading my tank to something *much* bigger. Looking at prices & inventory at local pet stores now.

They have so many nice tanks out there, complete with cabinets underneath. Way better than the last time I had to go buy a tank (about 15 yrs ago).

Lucky for me....My mom had a 55(long gallon) aquarium in storage. She already had a sponge filter, and the fish lights(I am going into town this week to try to get clamp on lamps for them) and she had the thermometer, and heater! I am going to be spending money on two lamps(heater and uva/uvb) and food. I am using driftwood for now(so they can get out) but I do want to upgrade to a turtle dock as soon as possible. I have a nice big flat peice of driftwood though, and my turtles love to crawl up on that to bask. I guess I am just pretty lucky I had 90% of the supplies in storage. :-D
