General Care Discussion :: Salt?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Fri Jun 16, 2006 11:51 am   Salt?

Does anyone know if a little salt in your turtles water is good for them? Like maybe a pinch, or half a teaspoon in 30 gallons of water(my 55 gallon tank isn't all the way full, so I am rounding it out to about 30 gallons of water)
Fish always need a little salt, and I would think that salt would be good for their shells. Does anyone know if a little salt is good for them? Thanks! Maplesquirrel

I've heard of using it for skin conditions or fungus but I don't know at what ratio. If they're healthy, don't bother.

I don't use aquarium salt (not table salt) in the tank water but know of some people who do.

As a preventative measure, you can follow the directions on the package that are given. I've heard of some people using something like a teaspoon per gallon of water.

Probably non iodized salt, or sea salt. I don't know if iodine would be very good for them?

You want to use aquarium salt. Sea salt is also OK, but not table salt (and no iodine).

I'm using a small amount of aquarium salt (Doc Fishwell brand) and I really can't tell what effect there is. I haven't had any algae problems at all because of the tank location even though a very small about of sunlight will reach the tank depending on the time of the year. My UVB light is also focused directly over the basking area.

I wouldn't worry about it. I have had the same turtle for 16 yrs & have never used it. They do get some salt in their diets from the veggies & other things you feed them (in trace amounts).

Aquarium salt in the tank water is more for helping to keep down the bacteria in the water than as part of the turtle's diet.
