Towards the middle of our trip I had to correct the guy watching over the turtles because he was feeding them twice as much as needed. I just got home two days after the air conditioning broke down in here and the water temps in both the fish and turtle tanks literally skyrocketed over 90 degrees (you're sure in for hell if you don't have your A/C by summer in FL). When I got home and checked the turtles, everyone grew about half an inch in there, so I checked everyone's shell and found slight pyramiding on everyone, but nothing rocky-feeling.

Sorry for rambling so much, but I noticed one of the larger turtles had an extremely long tail over an inch long with the opening halfway from the tip. I think I might have all the circumstances all screwed up, but I think this turtle is a male.

Did you get the AC fixed? You can post pics if you want too, and others can help you identify gender...I had to do that!

We did get the A/C fixed yesterday, but after three days of having lots of fans in the living room. I lowered the temp putting huge chunks of dechlorinated ice in the tank, and by the time the A/C got fixed the water got stable in the 76-78 range. Is there such thing as a water heater/cooler. Stupid question but now it seems I need one (if it exists) since now it is obvious the A/C breaks down every year, no matter if it is old or new.

I wish I could post a pic, but I think you can't get anything out of a disposable camera. I'll have to go on rough sketches for now.

My male turtle is just at 4 and half inches... I can tell he is a male because his tail is long; and b/c his front nails are very long... also he shows the world his male parts ( He particuarly likes an orange tape measure, lolol)....
Hope this helps

How long? This turt's tail is clearly over an inch long (don't need a tape measure) and his nails are sorta long. Where on the east coast are you anyway?

I am in Melbourne Florida... My male turtle's tail is about an inch long; where as my 8-1/2 in Female turtle's tail is way smaller.... And I just notice the difference in the two in the past six months...

Hmm, then I guess I have a male. I have another turt a pinch longer than the male and it has a bit smaller tail. I guess I can't know what that turt is, unless you guys think it is a female.

Edit: The larger turt has a tail 1/2 inch long.

They are still smale... Maybe you won't know for sure until they are a little bigger... a long and thick the tail, with longer front nails is a male...

I know, but I can't help noticing this turtle has the whole works (thick, long tail, sorta long claws).

You don't know how many times I've had to edit my posts because of typos...
