My res lives out side. let me sho u a pic of his pond...

UNder that latuce i heard he doesn't get much son.

Well i used to let him roam free outside for a bit so he could get more light when he was in a tank.

He would run into the garden. where the pond is now.

he has a log from petco that is hoolow but stable for him to bask on.

If you take him out for a while to roam and get more sunlight, stay with him so that he doesn't escape.

If you're using the lattice to protect the turtle from predators, you might do better with chicken wire. That way, he gets the sunlight he needs and can still be protected from unwanted guests.
