how do you tell the gender of a baby turtle? my turtle is about 7 weeks old. is it possible to tell gender then?

verde (he died on 9/17/06)

is he male or female.. i thoguht he was a male, so i called him paco

You will not be able to tell his/her gender until they reach 4 inches in length. Boys will develop very long front claws and a long thick tail while girls have much shorter stubbier claws and shorter tail.

These changes will not take place until right around or after four inches, so even if they favor one characteristic or another now or in between time, they still may change at 4 inches. So it's better to wait to be sure. (I know it's hard... I'm still waiting... and praying for a boy ;) )
