How old is your turtle? How long have you had him? My turtle only hisses if we poke at him....mostly my Vet (also Zeke's Grandpa) hisses at him. We were trying to get him to come out so we could look at his abrasion on his neck that he has from his shell.

Yes... It's normal (mine does that too). It's his way of saying "back off or I'll bite your finger off!"

The hissing sound you hear is air being expelled when your turtle pulls inside the shell.

Why would you do that? If he's tucked in it's because he's scared or uncomfortable. Don't poke him.

Even if that was the case, the vet would know how to get in there to look at it.

Why are you doing it? Is that what your vet has done? Why did he/she do it?

My dad was able to get him out of his shell....He is great with stuff like that...amazes people with Hedgehogs cause they always roll up in a ball when threatened...he can get them right out.

Mine used to hiss a lot when she first came to us. Especially if we picked her up! She doesn't so much now. But today I was trying to take pics of her (post in another thread in a sec) and I was also feeding her lettuce. I took too long to give it to her so I could take a pic and she hissed at me! LOL
