is it common for a turtle not to sleep during the day

because i never get to see it sleep but i have a feeling it sleeps when i sleep

Most likely your turtle is sleeping when you are...the lights should be off at that time as well. Your turtle may close his eyes and appear to sleep while basking, but he is still very alert!
