General Care Discussion :: Over Weight?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Mon Sep 04, 2006 5:38 pm   Over Weight?

I just aquired 3 red eared sliders from a friend of mine that was heading off to Med School. One of them has some excess flab hanging out of his shell, and he seems kind of lathargic at times. My friend took real good care of these turtles, and I just wondering if he is just chubby ( We call him Chubs) or if there is a health problem I should be concerned about. He is eating just fine, but that seems to be the only thing that motivates him to move off of his basking rock. Any help would be great.

Thanks

can he retract into his shell still??? and how often and what was he being fed..
more lickly a food issue rather than a health issue...

Sorry it took so long for pictures. Hectic work week. I currently feed them wardley sticks, and suplement with some veggies every few days, and I have put some rosey red minoes in also. Only one of them seemed to think that was great.

He does look chubby. There are some medical conditions that can cause swelling - are there any other symptoms? How old is he and how much was/is he fed?

From what you wrote, it looks like he could stand to lose a little weight.

I agree with Marisa. Maybe feeding him only every other day might help. Reptiles can develop problems (such as decreased organ function) over time if they get too overweight.
