Well it's been a busy month! LOL I think the last time I was here I had 17 turtle's well it went to 24 then I lost my Lexus, the 10 year old 3 inch res. She was just to tiny and weak to struggle through all the issues she had. I have said this many many times and will keep saying it....DO NOT PUT VITA SHELL ON A WATER TURTLE.....it does not allow them to dry out and shed like they are supposed to do. My poor Lexus suffered alot from the last owner useing that Crud daily for 10 years and was unable to shed. Picture a very heavy person in a wetsuit 3 times to small for them and how uncomfortable that would be. My vet and I tried to save her but it was to late she died in my hands on October 23rd.

That was the bad part, now for the good! I got a few more, Kameko and Ryoshi are two red ears from a very nice owner on here, they are both over 5 inches and very healthy.
Midori is my little boy Japanese Pond turtle from a breeder friend and he is also very healthy and doing great.
Then there are the twins...Honu and Kobi both are 3 toed boxie babys at one inch each, both doing great and eating fine.

I am also a possibility for a large 35 pound sulcata male which depending on what happens could be here in the morning. That is a very long story and I will tell that at another time if he comes to stay here.

So that puts me at 23 all together

Wow, sounds like you have your hands full. I'm sorry to hear about Lexus but I guess it was for the best.

Do you have pictures of all your setups? I would love to see how you manage! I am sorry for your loss.Do you think using vital shell every once in a while would hurt? I have used it like 5 times in the past few months... I was even told to put it on when she was shedding!

Chances are that the five times or so that you've used it won't cause permanent damage. I wouldn't continue to use it in the future though. Shedding is a natural process, so there is no need to add the vita shell to your turts shell.

I agree with missibsu the vita shell you have used should be alright but not to use it in the future. They are water turtle's and made to survive with the water and be fine...no need for more moisture.
I do have pics of everything from a few months ago and I will put those on here soon but I need to get some of the new enclosures. We have a pond almost done...took awhile for the sealer paint to get here so we should have that done any day now- whenever this rain lets up enough days to paint it! LOL
I have thought about getting certified to open a turtle rescue as we have the room and knowledge for it, then I can get some volunteers to help clean and feed! LOL Right now with 23 turtle's, the iguana, bunny, guinnea pig and the bird it's hard to keep up with everything.

Too bad you live so far away, I would love to visit your "farm" & meet all the kids!

I do have 8 water turtles outside right now, and the 3 sulcata, russian and ornate wood go outside during the days...little chilly at night. The rest are inside as they are smaller. I do bring the 8 inside when the temps drop into the 30's and then we have bins everywhere...but it works, the kids love it when they are all in because thy get to eat in the living room! LOL It only takes me {yes me, I hardly get help feeding or cleaning} about 1/2 hour to feed everyone every morning, and two days to clean at about 3-4 hours a day. We also have an iguana, bunny, conure bird, and a guinnea pig that are included in all the cleaning and feeding. Just get a system down and it goes fast.

Turtles are easy as with any animal as long as there is a setup, when you do things every day it just goes by fast. The longest is the water tanks but even with 10 of those I can drain all the way, scrub everything out and do the filters, then put it all back together in about 4-5 hours. I have the tank draining and pull everything out of the next one. While the largest tank is draining I wash the filter pads with the hose outside then start filling while I put everything back into the tank.
