I was out of the regular stuff I use to dechlorinate the water so I got this stuff (I can't find Repti-safe around here) to set up the tank, and starting yesterday, I noticed Big Daddy was rubbing his face and eyes. I didn't think much of it.
Then this morning when I went to feed them (Big Daddy is always at the glass in the AM, waiting for the greens) I noticed he was sitting inside the pipe with his eyes swollen shut! I reached in and pulled him out and he managed to get them open slightly (little slits). When I put some eye drops on him, his eyes opened immediately, and he looked around as if to say, "Ah, that's better". Then I checked Beaker, and he bit me, so I knew he was OK, but I didn't like the way Gomez looked, eyes were sorta puffy. (I may be reading too much into this).
At any rate, I ran out and found a pet store that had basic declorinator, and spent the morning draining the tank while the kids sat in a 35 gal. "Iso tank" I'm setting up for just this sort of thing. I tossed in a couple crickets and frozen blood worms to keep them busy, all ate, including Big Daddy, with eyes wide open.....
It took me about 2 1/2 hours to shake everything out, drain and replace the water, and I was amazed at how much he improved in that short period of time. His eyes are still puffy, but nothing like they were just a couple hours ago. Gonna keep an eye on him, and give him the drops for a few more days, but I'm definitely tossing that conditioner......
I only used 2ml. per 5 gals., measured with a pipette, so I know I didn't use too much.

I've been using that stuff for a while. Can't find Reptisafe round here anymore either. Never had a problem tho...hmmm. I guess turtles might be kind of like people in that some are more sensitive to some products than others. What are you using for dechlorinating now?

The stuff on the left. Its just basic conditioner, with no additives.....I just looked in on them they are both basking. Beaker is poking around in the rocks, so he's OK. I'm gonna give em both drops for a couple days (as long as they stay active and eat) if not it's off to the vet they go!

You could always buy Repti-Safe online. It's rather expensive compared to the other water conditioners I think....

Also, I'm wondering if I should dry dock them for a short time after I administer the drops?

I asked the vet the same thing, and he told me it was unnessisary to keep them out of the water after putting drops in. I had trouble with the little ones rubbing thier faces and eyes the one time I used a different conditioner too.

Does it say on the bottle what the product contains?

Well, it doesnt list ingredients, but it says on the bottle: Patented stress-reducing formula. Pure herbal extracts...Also coats scales and fins to protect against cuts and scrapes. Probably more for fish than turts...

I would probably want to dry dock him for at least 30 min after the drops. Does that bottle have an expiration date or any strange odors?

When my RES have eyes like that, I take them out of the water. When its really bad, sunlight seems to help. Since its almost winter, I use a MVB bulb. Eye problems are unfortunately common... I hope it's only the conditioner.

Me too....poor guy. Well, he's still on the "ramp" part of the basking ramp. I don't want to get too close, but I think he's sleeping. Thanks for the help, I'll keep you posted..

steve, how come you use an MVB bulb now? Is that to help keep air temps up?
