They can, but it would hinder the filter's performance. The input sucks in the dirty water, while the output expels the filtered, cleaner water. If you put the input next to the output, the majority of the water sucked up will already be filtered, and the other side of the tank would collect with dirty water.

Most people place one on each side, so the clean water comes out one side, and the dirty is sucked up in the other. The clean filtered water being pushed out one side also creates a small current that pushes the dirty water towards the other end, where most place the input.

In short, imagine this, a cycle.

I'm just sitting here shaking my head because sometimes you make absolutely no sense in your posts. I suppose you CAN set up the filter before you get your tank but why would you? What are you going to use it in if you don't have the tank with the water in it? Do you just want to put it together so you know that you can??

i want to put it together that way when the tank is set up i can pop the filter right in and its all set to go.

Sure you can set it up and let it sit there in all its glory. Yes you actually do need a water source to use a filter! Without the water source the filter sucks in air then mechanically, chemically, and finally biologically filters the air until its motor overheats and breaks!

hmmm thats weird cams message is in mine. but anyway also the instructions have 2 boxs one for output installation and one for input installation do i do both of these? or do i choose one of them

Thirzty Turtle.. Are you really not able to think for yourself? Do you need our permission before you do anything? I mean it's up to YOU if you want to put that filter together before you get the tank or not. It's not like we're going to come and beat you with a stick if you do it without the tank. I just personally see no need to do so but ifyou have nothing better to do and want to do it by all means do it.. Permission Granted!!!

If that floats your boat, sure.... fine.. do it.. but all these little posts that you keep making are completely ridiculous. Well most people put their filter together outside of the water, like sitting on a chair and piecing the filter together on a table, or on the couch, it's harder if you assemble in water.

Then they position the filter in the tank, and once everything is fine after inspection, they put in the water when they need/want to, prime it, then plug in the power.

In short, you can put it together, just don't turn it on.

You can put it together one day and put it in the tank the next. Just make sure you don't plug it in. Like mentioned before, you will burn up your motor if it isn't in the water.

And yes, Thirzty, you need to do both the intake and the outtake setup. Once you get started, I think you'll find the setup isn't as hard as it looks in the instruction book. The hard part is slipping the rubber tubing over the plastic nozzels. That part takes muscle and patience!

And it's correct what Missi said. You can put it all together before you get your tank but you can't turn it on until it's in the water or the motor will burn up.

As you're doing the assembly, if you get stuck somewhere, why don't you ask about it and someone here who has been through it already will try to help. I'll be glad to help.
