General Care Discussion :: turtles sleeping question

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Tue Jan 16, 2007 12:19 am   turtles sleeping question

Ok I was reading the forums and such and read about raising the water level so I did. And I'm afraid they might drown or something... Do they need another basking platform type of thing to sleep on? I know this may seem like a stupid question or anything but I'm just worried. Or do they just sleep underwater for a little bit? :?
Thanks

Mine usually sleeps holding the edge of the dock, on top of the heater or in a plant. Every once in a while she will sleep on the ramp of the dock.

They mostly sleep under water. They come up to take sniffs of air from time to time.

The little ones like to sleep and rest on something like a plant in the water. Do you have any plastic plants or real plants in the tank that the turtles can rest on?

You said "another" basking platform. Do they already have one? Can they get completely out of the water onto it? Is it easy for them to climb onto it?

What size is your turtle? How long have you had him/her?

Ok you guys just answered exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks and SpotsMama I have lots of plants for them to rest on. Yes I have a basking platform and it is very easy to get onto. I have two turtles each 1.5 inches. I have had them for a little more then 3 weeks. Again thanks for the replies.

Don't take my word for it, by any means I could be completely wrong, but

RES are aquatic turtles, and mine spend most of theit time underwater, it is uncommon for them to sleep with their heads above the water, they all sleep soundly and peacefully at the bottom of the tank every night, like rocks. My turtles are 7-11 inches big.

If you have an underwater "rest" for them that would be fine. They don't need another basking dock. Many turts like to sleep in the water (although at times they will sleep out of the water on the dock). Someone here mentioned about a plant the babies can sleep in, and now that I have a hatchling myself, I can heartily agree with that since I caught my baby sleeping in the leaves this morning when I turned on the light! For my adult RES, I have a large plastic "tree root" that comes within 3-4 inches of the top of the water. She sits on it quite a bit so her shell is submerged in the water, but if she sticks her head up, breathes comfortably.
