Hi,
After many years some pet shop owns lose their love or feelings for animals, it just happens over the years. I think some get over whelmed with the work and some of the animals have to be discarded to make room for others, like the more saleable ones and the health ones.
I am not happy about this at all and I think the goverment should put a stop to all kinds or crurlty to aminals. They don't even shut down the puppy mills.
There seems be no stopping this kind stuff.

i dont understand why all of you jump to the conclusion that the owner of the petstore threw away the turtles?

Sneaky, I think you make a good point. I'm absolutely positive in my mind that it's not the policy of Petco or Petsmart to not take good care of their animals. It would never be a store's policy to throw away a living turtle. However, the people working in stores are just like people everywhere - some are caring, thoughful people and some are just slugs. I can imagine Petco or Petsmart having an employee that thought nothing of throwing out a living creature, but unfortunately I see it happening anywhere.

By the way, I shop at both Petco and Petsmart and for the most part the people there really love the animals. I know one that spends the night in the store sleeping on the dog beds when the weather's bad and the roads get icy so she'll be sure there's someone there in the morning to take care of the animals.

maybe the people that work at petco in texas are actually nice people, but here in los angeles they're idiots and often very rude. and they don't know how to take care of turtles.
i wouldn't put it past the petco employees here to thow away a live animal.

Its like that here too, except with pet supermarket. The employees there are very very rude,i once asked a guy working there if he could fish me out some guppies for my turtles and he looked at me and said "do it yourself kid,im busy" another one time i asked if they had UVB bulbs and they told me that a basking spot lamp gave out everything i needed,UVB and UVA,i pointed out that the box said "gives out UVA not UVB" and they said"oh well,i dont know then"

My local petco is pretty good though, they have 6 RES (4 inches each) in this HUGE tank, with an outside basking area and an MVB bulb and all the proper trimmings (water heater, thermometer, filter) and when the employees dont know something they print out care sheets from the internet and give it out to customers. The downside is that they are realy expensive!

Around here the Petco's and Petsmart's don't sell water turtles. They do sell water turtle supplies. Sometimes they'll sell a Russian Tortoise. They're very pricy but very beautiful. Sometimes I yearn for one. If I get one, though, it will be from a rescue place.

in houston, at least on my side of town, petco does a lot of guess work. petsmart's actually very helpful. the guys at petsmart helped me get the best setup for my turts (i didn't know a long tank would be better until they told) and help me understand any of their behaviours (like their constant burrowing in the beginning). so really it all depends on which one you go to. the guy at petco wasn't even sure what was okay to feed them, or which light would be the best for my setup.
