General Care Discussion :: Central American wood Turtle

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi All,
I am almost sure that my turtle Baby is a central american wood turtle.
I have been looking on the web for days. I wish I knew how to post photos but I am not good at this computer stuff. What is pretty about her is she has reddish orange around eyes, looks like she has red eyes. Probably the males are prettier.
She has this same coloring on her neck and legs, none on her shell. Her neck is on the long thin side. The legs have more of a scaly look to them.
Every time I look at this little turtle she makes me smile. I am so glad I took her home a few days after she was dump in the pet shop.
Four years ago I look on the web and all this turtle stuff was not available, whole new world now.
Well that's all folks,
Evelyn

If you have a pic, you can email it to me jenaero@gmail.com and I'll post it. But I'm offline for the day as of 5pm EST.

Hi Evelyn,

There are some pictures of wood turtles here: www.chelonia.org/glyptemys_gallery.htm

Does anything there look like your turtle? There's also a care sheet link at the top, if you're sure you have one.

Hi Marisa,
I check the site, thank you.
I did not find my turtle. I did find two sites that had photos that looked like mine. One is related to the painted turtle. The other photo is of the Honduran wood turtle. There are so many subspecies it is hard to tell.

Not a great pic, but this is my ornate, honduran, central american wood. They go by sooo many names, try googleing the scientific names...Rhinoclemmys pulcherrima manni for the honduran woods, R pulcherrima inscisa is also called a honduran wood but those have yellow markings instead of red on the face. The painteds are Chrysemys picta , The scientific names seem to give better pics, without alot of nonsense to sort through.

The CA woods are Rhinoclemmys not glyptemys....huge difference in North American woods and central American ones. By painted were you looking at a pic of a painted wood? If so and that looks like your turtle then it's the ornate, painted etc....R pulcherrima manni that you have. Check on chelonia.org in the gallery for the Rioclemmys and see if it's what you have!
