So then where did all the people in the US get their smaller turts?

I would assume most pet stores would sell them under 4 inches for 'research and educational purposes'.

That is possible, but every store I've gone to so far hasn't had any smaller ones...I dont know though lol

I got mine at the local pet store. (illegally I might add, even if they did have it posted that it was illegal to sell them under 4") You do realize that smaller isn't always better, hatchlings tend to have more problems so I've been lead to believe.

Granted the little ones are cute, but I wouldn't want to be panicing every time they swam funny. I'm glad I have a "bigger" turtle.

I got our turtle, Koopa, while on vacation in Florida at a Souvenir shop that had a sign posted. But we had no idea what it meant until I did some reasearch on here. And he did great on the car ride home probably because there was just enough water to cover the bottom of his shell. He sat snug in his container between the two kids for the 8 hours home and adjusted great to his new environment.

lol. Thats actually funny because I'm in Florida right now for vacation, and there's a little shop that sells them. I would love to get one, but the only problem is I'm not driving home, I'm flying, so it's not really possible.

And I only want a smaller one because my tank is reletivaley small and I can't afford/fit a bigger one yet.

They don't stay babies forever, maybe you should just put it off until you can afford a larger tank. Just because you can buy one, doesn't mean you should or have to right now.

Just a comment on purchasing turtles online, I would only recommend it if you really look into where you're getting them from. I personally have purchased two from turtlepimp after a lot of communication with him and several others who had purchased from him. Even though I've had a good experience, I wouldn't give a blanket "recommendation" it's something you have to look into and decide for yourself.
As a side note, I agree with flutterby, perhaps purchasing a turtle "to fit" what you have isn't a good idea, as they sure do grow fast.

Thanks for the advice, but it's not neccesarily like i'm fitting the turt to the tank to leave him there forever. It's simply that I already have a 20 galon, so I'm going to get a smaller turt, that way I don't have to spend the big bucks on a different tank for a year or two. I do realize that they grow really fast, as I've been doing a lot of research, and I'm fully prepared to upgrade when the time comes.

Also, I've already decided not to buy from an online breeder.

The "Rule" is 10 gal's per inch right? My mom's turtles grew over 3 inches in a year, so you're going to have to upgrade sooner than you think.

I got my RES from the local pet shop - not a chain. They had a setup which was good by petshop standards (clean water with some depth, and a basking rock, but too crowded, and no heat source over the basking spot). They had about 10 baby RES, all of which were sold in a week. The place doesn't sell DEATH BOWLS.

I didn't even have to sign a form about educational use! Go figure.

I don't know how good the turtles are but I have used those sites for identification purposes.
